One of the first places that I discovered when I moved to Eugene was MECCA. It was one of their “fill a bag for a buck” fabric sales and I felt like I was in heaven. My studio at home is a small version of MECCA, full of supplies I have collected, thrifted and inherited through the years, that have moved with me to every place I have lived. When I got married in 2013 our wedding was completely handmade. I made all of the flowers and decorations with reused paper and fabric I found at MECCA. As the story goes, every time that I made a purchase I was entered into a raffle that they were having at the time. Just after the wedding, I won the grand prize basket of magic and when the board president delivered my prize I traded it for my volunteer application. I was a member of the Board from 2014 till 2019. In that time I was the Steward of the Idea Garden, the Gallery Coordinator and for many years I was in charge of curating the “objects” for the Object Afterlife Annual show.
MECCA’s mission is to divert material from the waste stream and into our community’s creative endeavors while inspiring our community to re-imagine materials while breaking down the financial barriers to arts and creativity.
